Would you eat it?

While following my favorite hostel in Rome on twitter I came across this dish featured at a food festival in Genoa, Italy.

Visitors keen to try something different will be fascinated by a new shrimp ice cream being unveiled this weekend. Created by Mario Rivaro, who specializes in savoury ice creams, the new variety will be made entirely from shellfish caught by fishermen from the Ligurian town of Santa Margherita Ligure.

The finely crushed fish will be blended with milk and then flavoured with a prized local white wine, Pigato di Albenga.

If I wasn’t a vegetarian and intolerant of milk and ice cream, I would think twice about trying it but I know that I would want to. Heck even as a vegetarian I am still curious and think checking off Shrimp & Wine Ice cream would be fun on the life list. Maybe just a bite…

PS Genoa is a town I was enchanted by in 2001 and I have been back 2 times since. I highly recommend using it as a one or two nights downtime chill town on your Euro vacation. There is a fantastic international hostel at the top of town that fun to get to. There are two great pizza places right near the hostel too. I don’t know the names but believe me it doesn’t matter. Either walk up a bit from the hostel or down from a bit and the first pizza place you come to… stop… and order! Oooo and Christopher Columbus was born here too! I have seen his house.

I’ve tried Malt Vinager Ice Cream and Wasabi Ice Cream, but I don’t think I could bring myself to shrimp 🙂

I would try it just to say I have tried it, same reason I have eaten Crocodile, Shark, Kangaroo and Emu. I think it is really weird though, shrimp is kind of rubbery, I would be interested to see how they make it creamy.

Crushing! My guess is it is all in the Crushing! Did you know that is how they make imitation crab meat? The process is apparently a very bad one. They scrape the bottom of the fisheries for the baby crabs, crush them to a pulp and use that to flavor the Pollock.
