Our third post in this little series on Internet dating is for all those profiles that seem more like an ad for Adventure Tourism.
These are the profiles that in the “Things about you” or “Interests” boxes contain:
Horseback riding, Bungee Jumping, Camping, Canoeing, White Water rafting, Mountain Climbing, Sky Diving, Extreme Sports, and Long walks along the beach
While I think I understand what these guys are getting at… the profile doesn’t seem to be the right place for them. (Michelle I know will agree) I would rather all that be summed up with “I have an adventurous side”.
All of those crazy items might be true (which is fun) but I am guessing they make up maybe 10% of someone’s life or you do them once per year. If I am going to date you, I want a glimpse at the 90% too…
One of my profiles reads like this:
Rollerblading, Skiing, Swimming, Travel, Yoga, Photography, Learning languages, Vegetarian
With the exception of Skiing I think that these shape my life better. Rollerblading is something I do whenever I get the chance. I often go swimming in the evenings. Travel is a huge part of my life and a passion. Yoga I don’t do often enough but when I do it can be up to 3 times a week. Photography I always try to make room for. I LOVE LANGUAGES so much and often enroll in classes. Vegetarian, well that is something I experience every day.
Save the crazy items (I have them too… Nude beaches, Cliff Diving, Wind Surfing) for first date conversation topics.
You hit the nail on the head Neil. I don’t want to feel like I have to be ready to audition for Extreme Sports Canada just to respond to your profile. I know these guys might like doing that stuff but honestly with all the things we have going on in our lives how often do you actually get to do it?
