Is it really only Popeye and myself that still eat Canned Spinach?

Popeye & Neil

I just finished searching three grocery stores and couldn’t find canned Spinach anywhere. I finally found it at Safeway but even then, the lady that helped me find it said “Really? Do they still make that?”

Have you ever had Spinach from a Can? I seem to remember an Ex bawking at the idea as well.

I have to say Neil… my first gut reaction was “eew.. really?!?”… and I’m a veggie lover myself.

One question comes to my mind – why not just steam fresh spinach instead???

    Let me count the ways:
    1) Canned Spinach won’t rot in your bachelor size fridge
    2) Canned Spinach you open, pour, heat, eat
    3) Popeye did it and look at the pipes on that dude!
    4) My hands can’t stand the texture of raw spinach

    LOL

    Fair enough 🙂

Your window may be closing on the market for canned spinach though.. you may need to start stocking up to create that “demand” in the market so they keep it on the shelves…

Wow the resemblance is uncanny, are you sure you’re not related to Popeye!

I have never tried it but maybe I will have to give it a whirl, if I happen to find it in my grocery aisle.

  • Canned spinach? BLEH. But then, I feel that way about most canned veggies.

I’m with Lesley on the fresh spinach, but since that doesn’t seem to work for you, let me introduce you to FROZEN spinach! Easy to store, easy to cook, no nasty spinach texture (??!) on your hands.

    I’m sure Popeye would approve!

    (Awesome photoshopping btw! Aagugugugugug!)

I’m so used to the frozen variety. I don’t think I’ve ever even thought about looking for the canned version. Wouldn’t it have too much sodium?

Hmmmm I never add salt to anything in my diet so I never really watch my sodium. I did however look at the can and here are the ingredients…

    Spinach, Water, Salt.

In 1/2 cup of drained Spinach there is 370 mg of Sodium. How bad is that?

But regardless, I have had a few votes for Frozen now so I will have to try it.

The recommended daily intake should not exceed 2400 mg per day, so you’re only using about 1/6 for the day.

Thanks! Good to know, I will be sure to compare when I am back in the grocery store. Less sodium is always good. 🙂

hmmm… unless the sodium is part of Popeye’s secret LOL
