This is the next post in the series on the quirks of internet dating.

Sometimes when you are talking to people online things can easily get out of hand. You aren’t face to face with the person, you are in the zone and you start to get excited. Suddenly all those thoughts you would have kept to your “inside voice” are flying out of your fingers through the keyboard.

If you are logged on to your anonymous account and the person is a bazillion miles away and there is no chance of meeting the person… it’s all fun and games.

However if you are caught using your real identity. The person is from your home town. Maybe you even know the person, you are headed for some potentially risky territory.

I have fallen prey to this a couple times recently. I know where I am coming from and understand that internet speak is bigger than real life. However many guys don’t seem to get this. No matter how much they say they do, when you actually meet face to face they are a little more charged than they might normally be.

Lucky you… if it’s a good match. If it isn’t though… you have a potentially sticky situation. They are going to wonder why you are suddenly running cold on them.

When I talk to someone online I know I am extra flirty sometimes. When I meet you face to face though, the clock starts over and we need to start at hello again.

Wikipedia defines Sexting as “the act of sending sexually explicit messages or photos electronically, primarily between cell phones.” I would want to beef that up a bit to include all electronic vehicles specifically mentioning e-mail, instant messaging, profile responses, and webcamming. I would also want to tone down the “sexually explicit” to encompass “Sexually forward” & “Bold flirting”.

Thoughts?

For me I found the hardest part about meeting people online was that you could connect in the virtual world, flirting with IM, etc but it is a whole different ballgame face to face.
There is so much to attraction for me at least that is visual – how they look, act, interact and carry themselves. We could have clicked online but then meet in person and its kind of “eeegh..nope not doing it”

I agree Neil, its much easier to flirt and be someone totally different online then in person. Its like you need to develop a whole new relationship when you meet in person. 🙂

I am with you, it is like being two different people. When you are face to face it just seems that the stakes are higher and there is a higher potential for embarrasment.

  • It’s sometimes in that first moment you see them…and sometimes when they just say nothing, or wont stop talking.
