So the other day I looked up into the sky on my way to work and saw a perfect half moon like image 2. I started to think… we rarely ever mean image 2 when we refer to a half moon. When I hear half moon I immediately conjure up a vision of image 3 in my mind. I think of outhouse doors, drawings kids do in elementary school, and that dang leprechaun with his blue moons that he claims are magically delicious.
Nobody ever sells stickers that look that image 2. No kid would ever draw a moon that looks like image 2. It would always be 1 or 3. In fact I think if I saw someone draw image 2 I would have to try and figure out what was in their sky. Do you think this is because image 3 is more marketable? Is half moon easier to say than crescent moon?
My favorite is always a full moon, however that full moon isn’t pictured above and conjures up a very different picture. 😉
Image 3 is definitely the most recognizable as the moon, but I don’t think anyone I know would call it a half moon… I would have said quarter moon right off the bat.

The thing is, in lunar nomenclature, there is no “half moon” per se. I think the full and crescent are more compelling images for our imaginations.
