Today I really feel Cuban

This trip has marked a huge milestone in my yearly visits to Cuba. I am really becoming Cuban. Not only did I make my way inland from the airport solo but I am making many other excursions on my own. They feel comfortable letting me park the car in the overnight lot alone. I drive around alone in the various small towns that my brain now has a map for to visit family members. I negotiate with various vendors often alone or on behalf of us all. I am very excited by this change.

Today I returned the rental car to Varadero myself so that Marifé could sleep in. She normally sleeps till 10 or 11 each day, and I think she has been missing that since I usually wake up around 7. Plus we normally want to leave the house by 9 or 10 so we can fit as much visiting time into our days.

By taking the car to town myself I will be spending the day just lounging about as this is my last day here. Then I will find my way back inland eventually. I am a tad bit nervous as this will only be my second attempt at this feat. I an only hope it will go as smoothly as the first time. The reason for my preoccupation with this task is that it is very odd being the 6’4″ tall minority. Everyone on the bus and at the bus stop pierces me with their stares and wonder of “What the h*ll is he doing?” LOL But this is one of those eye opening experiences that I have grown to love so much about travelling. Expanding my frame of reference

Back in Canada Tomorrow!
