While in Calgary I went to the theatre on Saturday afternoon. We saw “The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan” by The Old Trout Puppet Workshop.

This play was first pitched to me as “Want to go see a play with a giant mechanical penis?”. My instant answer was “Of course!”
The play was a brilliant production that made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion. The audience really liked it and it was fascinating to see a play put on with a mixture of puppets and 4 talented actors. There were one or two sections of this 80 min play that seemed to drag a bit but they were always quickly remedied by something amazing, shocking, or uproariously funny!
Because I went to it and it included a giant mechanical penis you might assume this play was gay in nature, but it was not. It is a story told by the ghost of the legendary ladies man Don Juan. The crowd in the theatre wasn’t at all what I expected it to be either. Being it was a matinee it was primarily senior citizens. I am told the evening performances draw a more varied crowd.
So I say that if you are in Calgary and looking for something to expose your mind to check out this puppet theatre production.

I saw Famous Puppet Death Scenes by The Old Trout Puppet Workshop last year at Theatre Network. Although this is not the type of show I would normally be drawn to, I was actually quite impressed. I respect the talent and creativity required to produce that type of show and I thought that overall, it was really well done.
